And now, the trailer for this movie was proper creepy. Looking forward to it. Lucky for us, the movie really sucks ass. So, Other Mommy is a film, for the life of me, I will never know why they don't call it Other Mother. Other Mother, it rhymes. It looks cleaner. Looks like it makes sense. To be fair, it is from the little girl's POV. And she calls this entity other mommy. She's not gonna say other mother because she's not hanging out in the Nexus with Jean-Luc Picard. Father, and other mother. I love the doll. Other mommies directed by Rob Savage, the director of that 2023 Boogeyman movie. Take that as you will, but it's the same director. So, in this movie, there's a family. Mother, father, daughter. The daughter has an imaginary friend that she calls other mommy because sometimes this entity takes the form of her mom played by Jessica Chastain because demons are pissed that they don't get to live as humans. So they have to do things like this, you know, like take over bodies in order to live as a human. So anyhow, yeah, this little girl has to give herself over freely to this entity, though. And the entity is like, "Okay, well, if you're not going to do that, I'm just going to scare the hell out of you. That'll get you to like me and trust me more."
Strengths of the Film and Critique of Execution
The problem with this movie pro did I say problem singular. I'll talk about what I liked about the movie. Keeping in mind these scenes that I'm going to explain can largely be cut out of the entire film. It's like this film is just a series of scenes that exist in a bubble. It's like you could have the thing that happened at the beginning and then the party then not have the family leave at all and we'll just have the last act. The movie is only 90 minutes long. I give it props for that, but that would have saved us more time. But I like the paranormal investigator scene. It tonally clashes with the rest of the movie, but the movie tonally clashes a lot because there are things in here that look like it's going in an interesting direction, but they don't really do anything with it. The beginning is also great. The beginning of this movie is essentially the first trailer for other mommy mommy. My brain's like, "No, it's mother, right?" No brain, it's not. That's a great scene, but it definitely feels like someone made a scene that makes for a good trailer, a hook of a trailer. Totally looking past or possibly forgetting about the fact that they have to tack on an actual feature-length film onto that beginning scene that makes for a good trailer for the sake of this movie being theatrically released. But here we are. Beginning scene is actually really cool. Don't worry about it. You've already seen it if you've seen the trailer. So, moving on. Because the beginning scene is the only scene in the movie that looks feel that's an oversimplification. The beginning of this movie is the only scene with any form of tension whatsoever. Look, I know and recognize that trailers are a sales pitch to the audience. The things that audiences might not like aren't going to be in the trailer. In fact, the context is going to be reshuffled, reshapen, re-edited to look better than it might look in the movie. However you look at it, sales pitch, whatever they are.
CGI and Tonal Issues
pitch, whatever they are, promises. I feel like I was catfished with other mommy. The phrasing is now going to make me laugh. But still, point remains. It's many things. It has scenes that are kind of cool. Scenes that are over the top. It tries to be dramatic. It tries to be funny. One thing it's not scary or even a little creepy. And when I say the movie's trying to be cool, I mean, there are scenes that I thought were cool concepts. I mean, granted, the kid being teleported out of the ball pit in which all the balls in the ball pit follow her is kind of a cool scene in execution, but then you're like, "What are you making a soft reboot of Jumper? What is this?" I'm not saying it's taken from the movie Jumper. I'm just saying I thought of the movie Jumper. Although, instead of being in a lake and the lake water follows through the teleportation, it's the kid in the ball pit and the ball pits do. I don't know if the hypodermic needles or the feces from the ball pit followed through, but the balls from the ball pit did. scene with the big CGI monsters chasing after people, killing people. And this movie seems to not realize that a lot of times in these situations, less is more when dealing with a monster like this. No, you just got big CGI thing with glowing eyes. You sit there and realize Batman with the glowing eyes and Batman Begins was actually scarier than this thing. And I'm going to say it, that's probably a problem. But again, with the inconsistencies, there's another movie that tries to go for an over-the-top bloody kill here and there, but it doesn't make sense for the movie we're actually in here. It's like Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. You know, the scene where the TX is in the back of the car, then punches through the dude's back, out his stomach, grabs the steering wheel, and starts steering the car, and you think to yourself, the scene itself just feels so out of context for the rest of the movie. This movie has kills like that where you're like, what are you going for here? is completely overproduced with the CGI, the teleportation stuff going on. It should have been a smaller scale, more emotional and personal family story. That's the whole thing, right? The demon's here to wreck that. But you don't care. So many times in this movie, I was thinking this is what the movie backrooms could have been. Lucky for backrooms, it you had actual sets, a big dude in a costume that looked like a mannequin pirate thing coming after people. It was unsettling. But it was unsettling because it felt real. You don't need much to scare people. Look at a lot of 2026 and the horror movies that have been successful. Why? Because they're imaginative and they don't have an overload of CGI. Then by the time the film is actually going for the heart and it's bringing it full circle, you know, to really hit you in the feels man, it hits you in something. It's kicked your patients in the balls for an hour and a half, but you're not feeling the feels you're supposed to be feeling here. You don't care. You feel none of it. And the whole thing feels like someone got their heart broken by their family at a point. Now they're just taking it out on the audience. It was almost like someone made that intro scene, you know, the scene that is the trailer essentially, then said, "Hey, Grock, finish the film for me." Now here we are. And now that I said that out loud, it really feels something like that. It is difficult to express to you how different the intro, the beginning of this movie is compared to the rest of the film. Yeah, let's
Final Verdict
just get this done and over with. Other is dog [__] All right, so Other Mommy, have you seen it? What did you think about it? Or what's a horror movie? Scary movie that's way too overproduced. It's way too big for what it needs to be. Whatever it is, whatever you think, comment below. Let me know.
