Actor Jimmy Shergill says films attempting to portray politically sensitive periods of history often run into trouble as they bring out hidden truths, and things naturally become complicated and political.

The actor responded to a query on why a film like Satluj, which dealt with a sensitive subject, did not see a release while his own debut, Maachis, dealing with a similar theme was appreciated.

Satluj starring actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh released in India last month on streaming service ZEE5 but became unavailable on the platform just two days later in India.

The film, based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, was stuck in censorship for over three years and was given over 127 cuts by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

"Politics exists, and it will always go on. But it is good when such issues are stirred up because it brings every single aspect out into the open. When you touch upon even a single aspect of sensitive matters, other hidden aspects surface as well. So, that is the politics of it," Shergill told PTI in an interview.

On the other side, Maachis, which was directed by Gulzar, was set against the turbulent period of insurgency in Punjab during the 1980s. Also starring Chandrachur Singh, Om Puri, and Tabu, the political thriller explores the personal and political turmoil faced by people caught in violence.

Upon the release, Maachis received critical acclaim and was a commercial hit too. At the 44th National Film Awards, the film won two honours, including Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Actress award for Tabu.

Shergill, who made his acting debut with Maachis, said he was largely guided by the filmmaker's vision.

"Whatever the film was trying to convey was actually the vision of the makers, I was just a newcomer, who had come from Delhi. I read the script and I cried. I suddenly learnt that I'm doing the film and was told to grow my hair and beard. It was my first film and I didn't really know how to play a role like that; I had only done acting classes. I had absolutely no idea how I would look on screen or how it would all turn out," he said.

'Was terrified'

The actor said he felt overwhelmed during the shoot and Gulzar insisted he remain present on set to observe every detail of the filmmaking process.

"…So, every single shot happened right in front of me. He (Gulzar sahab) would say things like, 'Let's change this (referring to scene), pick up those clothes and keep them aside', and I would quickly run over to help," Shergill recounted.

The actor said he was especially anxious about a long monologue scene in Maachis and credited Gulzar for showing confidence in him.

"I was terrified just thinking about it (scene). I'd say, 'Sir, I want to sit down and (rehearse)' but he would simply reply, 'Everything will fall into place, you'll nail it. If you weren't capable of doing it, I wouldn't have cast you in this film.' His words used to leave me confused, but he just kept reassuring me, saying, 'It will happen,' and that is exactly how the scene came together."

Shergill currently features in the Netflix series, Operation Safed Sagar. He plays the role of Wing Commander B S Dhanoa, the commanding officer who led the critical aerial combat operations from the front.

‘Don’t ignore bleeding gums’: Dentist says poor oral health can be linked to heart disease, not just cavities

Bleeding gums are easy to ignore, but they may signal more than poor oral hygiene. Dentist Dr Mark Burhenne explains the surprising connection to heart health.

Bleeding gums are often dismissed as a minor dental problem, but they may be a sign of underlying gum inflammation that can have implications beyond oral health. Dentist Dr. Mark Burhenne explained in his July 31 Instagram post why bleeding gums should not simply be treated as a cosmetic concern and why maintaining good oral hygiene could be an important part of overall heart health. What is the link between gum disease and heart health

Dr. Burhenne pointed to growing evidence connecting periodontal disease with cardiovascular health. The American Heart Association (AHA) first highlighted the association between gum disease and heart disease in 2012. More than a decade later, the AHA revisited the evidence in 2025, with newer research suggesting that the association extends to additional cardiovascular conditions, including atrial fibrillation and heart failure.

“My patient came in for a routine cleaning. Mid-40s, totally healthy, but she had bleeding gums. Six months later, she had a heart attack,” said Dr. Burhenne.

He stressed that such cases should not be interpreted to mean that gum disease directly causes a heart attack, but that persistent gum inflammation and cardiovascular disease appear to share important biological links.

How can gum disease affect the heart

Gum disease involves inflammation of the tissues surrounding the teeth. When gums become inflamed or damaged, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream. Researchers have also identified oral bacteria in arterial plaque, adding to interest in the connection between periodontal disease and cardiovascular health.

“When gums are inflamed, the same bacteria driving that inflammation slip into the bloodstream, and researchers keep finding them inside arterial plaque,” Dr. Burhenne explained.

Chronic inflammation is another possible link. Persistent inflammation in the body is associated with changes that can contribute to cardiovascular disease, including damage to blood vessels and the development or progression of arterial plaque. “That low, steady fire in your gums keeps your whole body inflamed. Inflammation is what stiffens and narrows arteries over time,” he said.

Why bleeding gums should not be ignored

Bleeding during brushing or flossing is often considered normal, particularly when someone has not been paying close attention to their dental hygiene. However, healthy gums generally should not bleed regularly. “This is why I treat bleeding gums as a vital sign, the same way I'd treat a blood pressure reading,” said Dr. Burhenne.

He added that oral health is frequently viewed as being separate from the rest of the body, despite growing evidence showing connections between oral and systemic health. “We keep acting like oral health is cosmetic. It's cardiovascular,” he said.

Three things to protect your oral and heart health

Dr. Burhenne recommended three basic habits to help maintain good oral health: “Brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups aren't just about a healthy smile, they're an important part of protecting your heart,” he said.

Regular dental visits can help identify gum inflammation and periodontal disease early, while consistent brushing and flossing can help control plaque buildup. Maintaining good oral hygiene is therefore an important part of preventive healthcare, even though it should not replace established measures for reducing cardiovascular risk such as managing blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, diet, physical activity and smoking.

Dr. Mark Burhenne has over 40 years of experience in dentistry. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a B.A. in History of Art, and earned his dental degree from the University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco.

Vishal wants Udhayanidhi treatment for all

On Saturday, speaking to ANI, Vishal said such incidents can happen in politics, but stressed that the same standard should apply to others who make remarks against women. He said, “These kinds of incidents do happen in political scenarios. So I wish that whatever happened to Uday, the same kind of punishment happens to everyone who speaks ill about women in our fraternity.”

The actor pointed out to YouTube content creators and social media users who troll women in the industry and advocated that the law should be used to punish them for it. “There are so many other people on YouTube; there are so many other people who have been openly speaking, hitting below the belt about our female fraternity. So I wish it were the same treatment,” he added.

Udhayanidhi Stalin's detention

Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, was detained and eventually released after questioning by police for about an hour at Sengipatti Police Station in Thanjavur district earlier this month. His detention came after protests over his alleged remarks against actor Trisha during a Cauvery rights demonstration.
