Hope (2026) Movie Review: Na Hong-jin’s Mixed Bag Sci-Fi Action Thriller

Introduction: A New Korean Sci-Fi Thriller

Let's get right into this review for Hope. All right, so Hope is directed by Nahung Jin. This is a Korean cinematic piece that's categorized as a sci-fi action thriller. I saw the previews once and thought this could turn out to be a solid time. There were screeners rolling out at the theaters earlier than expected, so I decided to give this a go today. Now that I've seen the film, what did I think about the cinematic package here? I found this to be a very mixed bag and ultimately thought the flaws outweigh the positives. To start with

1. The Best Parts: Police Chief Bumuk & Rural Town Chaos

the positives, I really enjoyed Bumuk, the police chief, as a character. I thought Hong Jong Min did a fantastic job in his role, especially during the first act. Another positive was also the set location usage and the cinematography that paired with many of the story beats. There's a lush backdrop to most of the scenarios and a breath of fresh air to this rural town as we explore different areas as it continues to get destroyed by an unknown entity. I also enjoyed act one as a whole and found there to be enough tension, intrigue, and grip through the action, dialogues, and general pacing to make for an effective experience. The general themes regarding hope were pretty smart in concept, but the actual execution of it in this story was a whole other set

2. The Downfall: Bad Pacing & Shallow Side Characters

of flaws. Now, I will say I was still able to appreciate the messaging of this story here, but it definitely wasn't the cleanest execution of set themes and ideologies. Now, to get into the negatives, I have to start off by saying this film drags on way too long for its own good. I reckon we could have shaved off 30 minutes at the bare minimum to make the pacing flow a little better from act 2 onwards. I also found many side characters here to be pretty shallow and unnecessary. They didn't really add much depth to the story other than just side padding in between the main chunks, and I honestly couldn't care what happened to any of these said characters. Another negative is that the story loses quite a bit of steam by the time we reach the middle of act two.

3. Act 3 Breakdown: Mediocre CGI & Predictable Ending

There's not a whole lot of intrigue left after I witnessed the mediocre CGI the said unknown entities and the predictability of the story route after we finished up act one which again was done splendidly. And then by the time we reached the conclusion I found the ending to be unsatisfactory and there were actually a couple of people who scoffed at my theater. My final score for Hope ends up being 6 out of 10. I definitely expected a bit more from this overall cinematic package. The CGI threw me off at times and I thought the entire story beat in act three just didn't cut it for me to remain interested up until the very end.
