Vibe This Movie Absolutely Does Give That
And it was when I heard Zack Kger talking about his motivation for making this Resident Evil film, talking about how he loves the Resident Evil games, the survival horror, the resource management, he wanted to show that on screen. And I got to say, in terms of vibe, this movie absolutely does give that. Now, this isn't an adaptation of any of the games or anything like that. We're actually following a new protagonist here, a medical courier trying to get a package to the Raccoon City hospital and then he just runs across a complete and total show of well, it's Raccoon City.
If you know Resident Evil at all, I don't need to explain how this is going bad because we are now in a Resident Evil movie. But if you don't know, big biohazard and now he has to deal with mutants and zombies and monsters. You got some game references in here. the typewriter, the green shotgun shell ammo box, finding a shotgun on the wall is like, "Yeah, that'll do in this situation." Also, if you follow the trail of what this movie is in terms of its formula, and he's driving, he runs across one infected. Then he runs across a house. Granted, if this was a Resident Evil game, I imagine he would have stayed in the house longer than the movie actually had him in the house. But the house was a nice nod to Resident Evil. But then he ends up, you know, in the city and then the situation just gets bigger and bigger. Also, the infected, the monsters, this whole thing gets bigger and bigger and got to say that feels pretty Resident Evil.
Funnier Than I Thought It Would Be
Austin Abrams stars in this Resident Evil That fish out of water of what Twilight Zone have I landed in to me is Resident Evil. Austin Abrams absolutely gives that vibe in this film that gives that vibe. and him not playing a Resident Evil character that's been in a game on the big screen does free them up and him up to portray this character really however he wants. And he does in the sense that he's funnier than I thought he would be. I'm not saying I didn't know Austin Abrams was funny. I'm just saying this movie, a Resident Evil movie is funnier than I thought it would be.
Horror And Comedy Mixing Winning Formula
Would I categorize this as a Resident Evil comedy? Kind of. Something I didn't expect. However, horror and comedy mixing, if you can mix it well, that has historically been a winning formula. I don't think they needed to do it, but they did do it. And I'm not going to lie, I was laughing in the movie because in large part, the comedy in this film did have to do with the situational circumstance. How this guy is completely out of his league here. The running joke about having to find keys for locks. Also, solid Resident Evil nod. That's right. These locks aren't just made out of reinforced steel. They're made out of something far more durable. Video game mechanics.
When I saw that Paul Walter Hower was in this movie, I was like, "Okay, is he funny?" I know he's been serious before. He played Richard Juel when he was going for that Oscar that one time, but in large, when I see Paul Walter Hower in a movie, I'm going to place my bets on, okay, so there's going to be humor in here. But it doesn't start or stop with him. He just fits in this movie because the movie actually is pretty funny. Possible. I'm just rolling with it because so many times a movie has humor that just completely takes away from the tension in the film.
The Humor Didn't Clash It Actually Worked
Whereas in Resident Evil, the tension is still here. It just also gives you a chuckle every now and then. All I'm trying to say is in a world where when I say, yeah, there was a lot of humor in the movie, it's as a negative, but in this Resident Evil movie of all things, the humor didn't clash. It actually worked. I think they could have pulled it back a little bit. There were moments where I was like, I don't need the humor here. For the first two acts, the humor is great. The last act, it still works, but they could have pulled it back a little bit to make the last act a little smoother.
But getting there, the tension was solid. The moments were a couple of moments, one in particular, where I was like, that's a little uncomfortable, but it's Resident Evil. The T- virus doesn't care. T- virus, Gvirus, whatever letter virus they're on at this point in this movie.
The Ending Of The Movie Is A Little Meh
The ending of the movie is It's a little meh for me. Did someone bring that up in the script read in the room? All like, great, Zach. At this point in the script, this storm's really picking up steam. So, after that, what happens? Yeah. Oh, I did they run out of budget? Like it's either we cut the movie off here or we complete the entire end of the film and have it come out in December. Christmas in Raccoon City. How's that sound? No. Okay, just cut it, release it. I don't know.
I will say there are scenes in the trailer that are not in this movie. I always find that strange. Also, because is that a liquor? There are no liquors in this movie at all. There was a point near the end I felt like it was going to tie into the games, like the games in this movie could work in tandem and exist in the same universe, but didn't go there. Resident Evil fans might see it, too. They'll be like, "Is that No. In the end, is this Resident Evil movie the best Resident Evil film of all time?" Yes. Is that bar so low a piece
